2022 was a busy year for Sweeney Architects and here are some of the highlights of the year. Start with some of the major projects completed in the year

St. Patrick's Senior National School

St. Patrick’s Senior National School in Skerries badly needed new classrooms.

The ageing temporary classroom block and toilets had reached their end of life and replacement permanent accommodation was urgently required.

Sweeney Architects designed an extension of four brand new classrooms with ensuite toilets and refurbished an existing classroom to provide it with ensuite toilet facilities.

The new extension was placed in such a way that the existing playground area was maintained. A new entrance onto the playground was provided and three new SET support rooms and assisted toilet/shower facilities were built.

During construction it was discovered that the existing boiler dating back to the 1970s was no longer fit for purpose.

A new energy efficient boiler was installed to serve both the existing school and its extension.

The project was completed in time for the school’s new year in September 2022.

Strokestown House

Following the highly successful restoration of Strokestown House glasshouses, the oldest in the country, in 2022 we embarked on the restoration of the windows to the main house .following strict heritage guidelines and using traditional skill sets throughout the project, we are pleased to say that the job is now completed, ensuring the survival of one of the Irelands historic country houses.

St. Hilda's Special School

At St Hildas Special School in Athlone the project required the extension of the existing school including 2 new mainstream classrooms. We provided 2 new classrooms, a new staffroom, an accessible WC & shower, a reconfigured internal circulation, and a new main entrance including a meeting room and secretary’s office. The new main entrance provides a more inviting and accessible access point for both parents and pupils with its larger more generous lobby and direct access to the secretary’s office. In providing 2 new classrooms we had the opportunity to enhance the circulation spaces within the building by providing roof lights in both new and existing corridors to allow in natural light and create a more comfortable space for pupils and staff to move around. With Large windows and roof lights the classrooms are bright spaces which provide pupils with a more comfortable space to learn.
