Sweeney Architects

Newbridge Sports and Leisure Centre, Station Road, Newbridge, Co. Kildare

This project was appointed under the National Tender Procedures. The existing sports centre dated from 1985 and the project was to extend and upgrade facilities to provide new changing areas, reception and gym including sauna and steam rooms. Sweeney Architects provided architectural design, project management and PSDP. This project extended and upgraded facilities to provide state of the art gym, café area, sports hall, sauna, steam room and changing rooms. Renewable technologies and energy efficiency were an important part of the design. 72m2 of flat panel solar collectors have been installed on the roof to assist in hot water generation for use in the sports centre. The ventilation system incorporates Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) units which utilise the waste heat of the exhausted air to heat the incoming fresh air. Natural Gas replaces oil providing a cleaner and more cost effective fuel. In addition a Building Management System (BMS) allows the centre manager to monitor energy usage for all plant equipment from a front-end software program on a PC. The system can be fully interrogated and settings adjusted to maximise the new pumps incorporate Variable Speed Drive (VSD) motors which reduce electrical energy consumption during operation.
