Sweeney Architects

Extension to Drogheda Leisure Centre, Marley Lane, Drogheda, Co. Louth

This project was won under a public procurement design competition. The design was based on complimenting the existing pool hall to provide dance studios, additional changing areas, saunas and steam room. The existing swimming pool complex which was completed in 2006 was already over capacity. Sweeney Architects’ design for the extension was based on a “little brother” concept with a daring glue-lam roof structure which balances the existing curved roof of the main building. As well as design, Sweeney Architects provided project management, architectural detailing and PSDP services on this project. In terms of energy efficiency, the external walls are shuttered ecocem-concrete, a system which reduces the Carbon footprint of the construction phase. The glue-lam roof was proposed for its sustainable materials. While the ventilation and hot water systems were extended from existing capacity and linked via a Building Management System (BMS.)
